Frequently Asked Questions

How it works

What is leak-proof underwear?

Underwear with a slim, absorbent liner built right into the gusset — so it does the job of a pad, liner, or tampon while looking and feeling like regular (cute) underwear. Flower Girl underwear handles periods, postpartum bleeding, bladder leaks, and everyday discharge, and it's reusable for 300+ wears.

How does Flower Girl underwear actually work?

A hidden 3-layer gusset does all the work: a quick-dry top layer pulls moisture away from your skin, an absorbent core locks it in, and a waterproof, toxin-free barrier (no VOCs) keeps it off your clothes. All you feel is soft TENCEL™ modal.

How much liquid can it hold?

Up to 3 regular tampons' worth — about 15ml, or roughly 4 pads — and it keeps you leak-free for up to 12 hours. Check each product page for that style's absorbency details.

Where does the blood go? Will I feel wet?

It's absorbed into the core of the gusset and locked there. The top layer is quick-drying, so your skin stays dry — no sitting-in-it feeling, no bulk, no rustle.

Can I wear it instead of tampons and pads, or just as backup?

Instead of. On most days it's your whole period setup — no tampons, no bulk, no second-guessing. Heavy-flow days? Some women pair it with a cup or tampon for extra insurance, but that's a preference, not a requirement.

How long can I wear one pair?

Up to 12 hours, depending on your flow. That covers a workday or a full night's sleep. Then it goes in the wash and a fresh pair goes on — same as you'd hope anyone treats underwear.

Can I sleep in it?

Yes — this is where period underwear really shines. Up to 12 hours of protection means you can sleep in whatever position you like, on whatever sheets you like. White pants on day two? Go for it. White sheets? Also fine.

Does period underwear smell?

No. The liner keeps 99%+ of odor-causing bacteria in check, and the breathable TENCEL™ modal doesn't trap heat and moisture the way synthetics do. Rinse and wash after each wear and you'll stay fresh all day.

Is it bulky? Can you see it under clothes?

No. The liner is slim — it feels like slightly substantial underwear, not a diaper. Nothing shows under leggings, and yes, there's a thong.

Does it work for bladder leaks?

Yes. The same 3-layer gusset that handles periods handles light bladder leaks — sneezes, workouts, laughing at something actually funny. It absorbs up to 15ml and keeps you dry for up to 12 hours.

Is it good for postpartum?

Very. Postpartum is one of the main reasons women come to us: soft, breathable TENCEL™ modal against healing skin, PFAS-free materials, and real absorbency without a mesh-underwear situation. Many customers start with briefs for postpartum coverage and comfort.

Can I wear it every day, even when I'm not on my period?

Yes — it handles everyday discharge and light leaks, and because the body is TENCEL™ modal, it's arguably more comfortable than your regular underwear. Many customers wear Flower Girl daily and keep the higher-absorbency rotation for period days.

Can I swim in it?

No — it's designed to absorb liquid, so a pool would use up its capacity immediately. It's underwear, not swimwear. It is great for before and after the water, though.

How long does a pair last?

300+ wears with proper care — rinse, cold wash, hang dry. That's years of protection from one pair, which is why it pays for itself compared to disposables.

Is period underwear reusable?

Completely. Wear, rinse, wash, repeat — 300+ times. One pair replaces hundreds of disposable pads and tampons, which is better for your wallet and dramatically better for the planet.

What are reusable menstrual pads?

Cloth menstrual pads are a sustainable, reusable alternative to traditional disposable menstrual pads. Designed from multiple layers of absorbent fabric, these pads are designed to be washed and reused, making them a sustainable choice for menstrual care. They come in a range of sizes, thicknesses, and absorbency levels, allowing users to tailor their selection to specific needs and comfort.

Materials & safety

What is Flower Girl underwear made of?

The body is TENCEL™ modal — a silky, breathable fiber made from trees. The gusset is a 3-layer system: quick-dry top, absorbent core, and a waterproof barrier that's toxin-free with no VOCs. Everything is PFAS-free and made in LA.

What is TENCEL™ modal, and why do you use it?

TENCEL™ modal is a fiber derived from sustainably harvested trees. It's softer and more breathable than cotton, gentle on sensitive skin, and produced in a closed-loop process that reuses water and solvents. We use it because your underwear touches your most sensitive skin all day — the fabric matters.

Is Flower Girl underwear PFAS-free?

Yes. PFAS ("forever chemicals") have been found in some period products, including some period underwear brands — they don't break down in the environment or in your body. Flower Girl is PFAS-free, full stop.

Is period underwear safe to wear?

Flower Girl is, by design: PFAS-free materials, a toxin-free waterproof barrier with no VOCs, and TENCEL™ modal against your skin instead of synthetics. We started this brand because "body-safe" shouldn't be a premium feature in something you wear 24/7.

Where is Flower Girl underwear made?

Los Angeles, California. Designing and producing close to home means better oversight of materials and quality — and it's part of why we can stand behind every pair.

Is Flower Girl sustainable?

Yes, in the ways that count: TENCEL™ modal from renewably sourced trees, reusable underwear that replaces hundreds of disposables (300+ wears per pair), and production in LA rather than shipped across an ocean.

Care & washing

How do I wash period underwear?

Easier than you think: rinse in cold water until it runs clear, then machine wash on a cold delicate cycle. Hang to dry (or tumble low). No soaking, no special detergent, no ritual. Skip bleach and fabric softener — they damage the tech.

Do I really not have to soak it?

Really. A cold rinse until the water runs clear is all the pre-treatment it needs. Soaking is a menstrual-cup-era habit that period underwear left behind.

Can I put it in the dryer?

Hang drying is best for the absorbent gusset, but a tumble dry on low heat is fine. Just avoid high heat — that's what degrades absorbency over time.

Will it stain?

The cold rinse right after wearing is what prevents staining — rinse until the water runs clear and the fabric stays looking new. (Hot water sets stains, which is why every washing step is cold.)

Does washing wear out the protection?

No — with proper care the absorbency actually improves over the first several washes, and the underwear is built for 300+ wears. Cold wash, no bleach, no fabric softener, low or no heat: that's the whole preservation formula.

How many pairs do I need?

Start with one and see how it fits your flow — most women order two more within the month. A comfortable rotation for a full cycle is enough pairs to cover your heaviest days with time to wash and dry between wears. Our 3-packs and 5-packs exist for exactly this.

Sizing, fit & styles

How do I find my size?

Order your usual underwear size — Flower Girl fits true to size. If you want to double-check, our size chart lists waist and hip measurements for XS through XL.

What if I'm between sizes?

Size up. You'll get the same protection with a more comfortable fit, and comfort is the whole point.

What sizes do you carry?

XS through XL — waists roughly 24–38", hips 32–46". The full chart with measurements is on our Size Chart page.

What styles does Flower Girl make?

Thongs, briefs, boxers, and a brief with a removable pad design — plus tanks, matching sets, and 3- and 5-pack bundles. All in TENCEL™ modal, all leak-proof where it counts.

Can a thong really handle a period?

Yes — ours absorbs up to 3 regular tampons' worth (15ml) and protects for up to 12 hours, same as you'd expect from far bulkier options. The gusset placement does the work; the back of a pad never absorbed anything anyway.

What's the difference between the styles?

Coverage and vibe, not protection quality. The thong disappears under anything, briefs give fuller coverage (a postpartum favorite), boxers are the sleep-and-lounge pick, and the removable-pad brief lets you adjust absorbency. Each product page lists that style's absorbency.

Orders, shipping & the First Pair Promise

How fast do you ship?

Orders ship within 2–3 business days from Los Angeles (we ship Monday through Thursday). You'll get an email with tracking as soon as your order is on its way.

I didn't get a tracking number — where is it?

Check your spam or promotions folder first — tracking emails love to hide there. Still nothing? Email hello@flowergirl.co and we'll resend it.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — we ship internationally from Los Angeles. Shipping options and rates are calculated at checkout, and depending on your country, customs duties or import fees may apply on delivery.

What's your return policy?

Because underwear is underwear, we can't accept returns — all sales are final. But if it's your first pair, you're covered by the First Pair Promise below. Questions before you buy? Email hello@flowergirl.co — a real human answers.

What's the First Pair Promise?

Trying period underwear for the first time is a leap, so we made it risk-free: if your first pair isn't right — wrong size, wrong style, just not for you — tell us within 30 days of delivery and we'll send a free size or style exchange, or store credit for the full amount. Your choice, no need to send anything back, and store credit never expires. Full details here.
